Is it correct that promiscuous mode HAS to be enabled on the host interface in order for “Bridged Adapters” to work in VirtualBox VM’s? By default, a guest operating system's virtual. A virtual machine, Service Console or VMkernel network interface in a portgroup which allows use of promiscuous mode can see all network traffic traversing the virtual switch. The thing is that I’ve never had to do this manually in the past, nor is it clearly documented what one should do if the interface doesn’t automatically go into promiscuous mode. Promiscuous mode is a security policy which can be defined at the virtual switch or portgroup level in vSphere ESX/ESXi. Skipping over a few hours of head-scratching, I eventually noticed WireShark hadn’t put the interface into promiscuous mode. Or you could do that yourself, so that Wireshark doesnt try to turn pomiscuous mode on. It also shows the server sent a DHCP Offer in response.įor further troubleshooting I fired up WireShark on the host and while I could see the outgoing DHCP Discover packet from the VM, I couldn’t see the subsequent DHCP Offer. As the article, only set MonitorMode2 as work as promiscuous Mode hypervPromiscuousModeSetUp Here says that set MonitorMode2 and also set physical mac address on host computer to do port mirroring.
